FCC Chair Brendan Carr Accuses Media of Misleading Stephen Colbert Controversy
The head of the US's top media regulator, Brendan Carr, has accused journalists of being misled by late-night host Stephen Colbert's claims that his network, CBS, had blocked him from interviewing a Texas Senate candidate. Carr, a self-proclaimed supporter of former President Trump, made these remarks during an FCC meeting, criticizing the media for what he perceived as false reporting.
Colbert had alleged that CBS was censoring him by preventing an interview with James Talarico, a Texas Democrat. However, CBS issued a statement clarifying that they had not blocked the interview but provided legal guidance suggesting that it might trigger equal time regulations, which would require the network to also platform Talarico's campaign rivals.
Carr's comments at the FCC meeting were strong, stating, 'Yesterday was a perfect example of why Americans trust gas station sushi more than the national news media. I think you should be ashamed for being misled and spreading those lies.'
The controversy arose from the FCC's guidance in January, which stated that daytime and late-night talk shows would not automatically qualify for exemptions to the equal time rule, enacted in 1934. This rule requires comparable air time for all legally qualified candidates. Colbert's comments led to criticism of CBS for 'corporate capitulation,' as expressed by Anna M. Gomez, the lone Democrat on the FCC.
Carr, however, defended the FCC's actions, stating that they were simply enforcing existing rules. He told reporters, 'If a legally qualified candidate is on, all other legally qualified candidates must receive comparable air time. We will apply this law. There was no censorship.'
The situation has sparked debate, with some arguing that Colbert's interview was a bona fide news interview and should have been exempt. Carr, however, noted that CBS and Disney (ABC's parent company) had not requested such an exception. Late-night and daytime shows had previously assumed that host-conducted interviews with politicians would qualify for the exception.
Despite the initial controversy, Colbert eventually aired the interview on YouTube, where it gained nearly 6.1 million views, far surpassing traditional television viewership. The controversy has also boosted Talarico's campaign, which raised $2.5 million in 24 hours following Colbert's initial comments.
Carr also confirmed that the FCC had opened an enforcement action against ABC's 'The View' for an appearance Talarico made earlier in the month. He declined to provide further details on the investigation.
However, FCC member Anna M. Gomez took a different stance, accusing the administration of using the FCC to target content it dislikes. She suggested that the FCC was weaponizing its enforcement process to pressure broadcasters into self-censorship.
Colbert, in response to CBS's statement, expressed surprise that the network had not consulted him. He criticized the statement, suggesting that it was written by lawyers and not reflecting his approved script. Colbert emphasized his desire to maintain a positive relationship with CBS, despite the disagreement.
The controversy has raised questions about the enforcement of equal time rules and the potential bias of the FCC. Some, like Gigi Sohn, a former counselor to an FCC chair, worry about unequal enforcement, particularly in cracking down on liberal media opposition to Trump. Sohn argues that rival candidates, not the FCC, should be responsible for requesting equal time opportunities.
Carr concluded his comments by criticizing Colbert, who has mocked him on his show. Carr suggested that Colbert's show cancellation signaled the end of his time in the spotlight, which he found difficult to accept.
