The M27 motorway has triumphantly reopened its lanes a whole day ahead of schedule, following extensive engineering work that had led to its closure over the festive season. This vital stretch of road, which connects junction 11 for Fareham to junction 9 for Segensworth, was shut down on Christmas Eve but is now accessible again since 04:00 GMT.
This project is part of an impressive £100 million development aimed at constructing an underpass to facilitate access to the new Welborne Garden Village. During this endeavor, an enormous four-lane structure weighing 8,500 tonnes was carefully maneuvered into place using a technique known as the "box slide." Remarkably, this is the first time such an innovative method has been utilized in Hampshire, making it a significant milestone for the region.
Throughout the holiday period, a dedicated team of 130 workers put in tireless efforts, literally working around the clock to tackle what Hampshire County Council referred to as a "mammoth engineering challenge." The massive underpass, equivalent in length to six double-decker buses, was slid a distance of 65 meters (or 213 feet) into a specially excavated trench, after which the road surface was restored to ensure safe passage for vehicles.
According to local authorities, this groundbreaking approach not only expedited the construction process but also significantly reduced the lengthy lane closures and speed restrictions that would have otherwise plagued motorists for months. Council leader Nick Adams-King expressed pride in the project's completion within just eleven days, calling it a remarkable achievement. "We should be really proud of how the entire area has collaborated," he stated, highlighting the exceptional teamwork between public and private sectors to deliver this project so efficiently.
Although the motorway is now open, drivers should remain aware that lane restrictions and a 50mph speed limit will still be enforced as crews continue with the remaining finishing touches. The ongoing collaboration involves National Highways and the contractor VolkerFitzpatrick, funded by the Buckland Group, the developers behind the Welborne Garden Village, which is set to eventually include 6,000 homes.
