The IMF's Banal Language is Sane-Washing an Economic Crisis (2026)

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is engaging in a dangerous game of normalizing an economic crisis, and it's high time we called them out. Their recent report, titled "Global Economy: Steady amid Divergent Forces," is a prime example of how powerful institutions can whitewash reality.

In a world where Donald Trump, an egomaniac with the temperament of a toddler, wields immense power, the IMF's language is disturbingly calm. Trump's recent announcement of tariffs on European countries, with the threat of increasing them unless Greenland is ceded to the US, is a clear sign of his erratic behavior. Yet, the IMF's report mentions "trade tensions" as if it's a minor blip on the radar.

"Flare-ups" indeed! The IMF's choice of words is a classic case of sane-washing. They could have acknowledged the potential for Trump's actions to lead to a full-blown crisis, but instead, they tiptoe around the issue.

And it's not just the IMF. The media, too, seems content with a straight report on Trump's threats and the violence in the US, treating it as a mundane occurrence. When did we become so desensitized to the betrayal of international laws and the normalization of violence?

The IMF's report further highlights the issue with its focus on AI investment as a driver of economic growth. While AI may offer potential, it's a risky bet, as the report itself acknowledges. The potential for a global recession looms large, yet the IMF chooses to ignore this elephant in the room.

Energy concerns? No problem, as long as governments implement policies to contain the impact on energy prices and manage workforce transitions. But what about the bigger picture? What about the impact of Trump's actions on global stability?

The IMF's silence on Greenland, Venezuela, and Trump's personal UN is deafening. They pretend that normality persists, but the truth is, normality has fled, leaving a trail of chaos in its wake.

Trump's recent invitation to countries to join his "board of peace" for a hefty price tag of $1 billion is a prime example of his delusional grasp on reality. And yet, the IMF chooses to ignore these red flags, focusing instead on growth projections based on a false sense of normalcy.

We must not turn a blind eye to the kidnapping of a national leader, Trump's withdrawal from international organizations, and his erratic behavior. The IMF's pretence only emboldens Trump to continue his destructive path.

It's time to wake up and realize that the IMF's language is a dangerous form of gaslighting. We cannot afford to ignore the reality of the situation and must hold institutions accountable for their role in normalizing crisis.
